You shouldn’t work at a corporate company…
Or should you? If you want to, we can help you here!)
Now, I always talk about how you can land a job, especially in corporate companies.
But no one talks about the “traps” these corproate companies lure you into.
Let me share with you a lesson learned from my time at top tech companies. It's something I will never, ever forget.
When I was at Google, I remember getting “trapped” at work. I always thought the food and perks were free, but was it, really?
Nothing is truly "free" at these companies. Sure, the free food and customized burgers from the cafeteria can be mouth-watering, and it's easy to fall for the fun activities and the chance to rub shoulders with celebrities on campus.
But here's the kicker - many companies use this tactic to keep you at work so you’re working longer than a 9-5 and instead, from 9-9. You forget about the so-called “work-life balance” and then work becomes your life.
It’s a part of the IOU tactic that many employees feel - if your company gives you free perks, then you should, in turn, produce better work and work even harder.
So what is my advice to ensure you don’t fall into these “Golden handcuffs” when identifying the company you’re interested in and when you finally land a job?
1. Set boundaries with your manager and team members: Manager messaging you on a Sunday at 3:00PM PST for an update? You don’t have to respond. Team member asking if you can take on a project but you have too much on your plate? You don’t have to take it. Set boundaries and expectations, and you’ll see that more people will respect you.
2. Get into hobbies outside of work: Whether it’s joining an intramural sports team or learning how to draw, take on hobbies that you find interest in and that will grow your skills in something you enjoy!
3. Don’t ONLY talk about work: One of the topics that everyone talks about outside of work is, in fact, work. “How is Jonathan as a manager?” “What projects are you working on at work?”. Your conversation doesn’t always have to circle around just work; there’s more to you than your job!
4. Always be open to opportunities: Apply to jobs at other companies, and keep your #OpenToWork onto recruiters only. Use tools like WonsultingAI to improve your job search where you sit back and relax seeing the opportunities come in!
Remember this: everything that glitters is gold, and work does not center around your life.
