It’s Jonathan, CEO/Co-Founder of Wonsulting here!
I’m excited to let you know that I’ll be personally giving you tips every Tuesday for the next few weeks to land you a job and share with you who’s hiring in my network.
Does this sound interesting to you?
If so, respond to this email and let me know your thoughts!
I want to begin with a couple of quick things…
- Be sure that my emails get to you (and not spam!) by adding me to your Primary Inbox or contacts list
- Get even more helpful tips by following me on Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn
Now, let’s begin with how to land a job during these times with a simple breakdown.
I call this the Tiers of the Job Search Process by Wonsulting.
I believe that there are 4 tiers in the Job Search process:
- Tier 4: Applying to Roles
- Tier 3: Referral
- Tier 2: Hiring Team Member Recommendation
- Tier 1: Hiring Manager Recommendation
Most of you are in Tier 3 & 4: Applying to roles on a company website or getting referred by someone random at a company.
But think about it: let’s say you’re applying for a New Grad Marketing Role at Adobe.
Tier 4: Applying: How many people are applying? Let’s say 1,000+.
Tier 3: Referral: How many people are getting referred? Let’s say 200.
Tier 2: Hiring Team Member Recommendation: How many people are getting recommended by a Hiring Team Member? Let’s say 10.
Tier 1: Hiring Manager Recommendation: How many people are getting recommended by a Hiring Manager? Let’s say 2.
Lastly, how many roles are they recruiting for? Let’s just say 5.
If you were a recruiter/hiring manager, what would you look at first? Let’s say they choose the 2 from the Hiring Manager recommendation and they choose 2 from the Hiring Team Member recommendations.
That only leaves 1 role left for 1,200 to go for.
The reason why you’re getting rejected is because if you’re in Tier 4 or 3, you’re getting beat out by the Tier 1 & 2. If you’re able to get into Tier 1 or 2, that’s when you get a better chance, especially coming from a non-target school or from a non-traditional background.
Now, how do you get into Tier 1 or 2?
Networking.
With who, you may ask?
I have some homework for you to make this actionable…
Go to my Linkedin Monday polls such as this one and see who I tagged.
If they’re recruiting for a role you’re interested in and qualify for, reach out to them.
Send a personalized invite saying something like this:
Hi (NAME), hope you’re well! I saw you’re recruiting for (ROLE) at (Company) from Jonathan’s poll. My
experiences/skills in (XYX) would be a great fit for the role, Would love to connect and discuss!
Try it out and let me know how it goes for you.
Here for you, always.
